Alex pried her eyes open, staring into the darkness of her room. Something had woken her up. A small light from her bathroom helped her eyes adjust to the nearly complete darkness as she looked around.

It didn’t take long for Alex to realize there was an Aragnokan lying on top of her covers, his silhouette suggesting he was staring blankly up at the ceiling.

“Kylok?” Alex lifted her head from the pillow, scooting closer until she was nearly plastered to his side, the thick layer of her comforter separating them ever so slightly.

“Go to sleep, Geza.” Kylok didn’t acknowledge her other than that, and even then, his voice was off. Void of any real emotion.

Alex frowned in concern, moving closer to get a better look at him. “Mi amor, what’s wrong?”

Kylok ran a hand down his face, his body growing taut with tension the longer he refrained from answering her. Alex pulled her hand free of her comforter, reaching out to touch his jaw.

“I do not wish to mate right now,” he stated gruffly, dodging her hand seamlessly.

“I’m too tired for sex anyway,” Alex lied, pushing Kylok from her bed. He stood with a sharp glare, but he couldn’t even meet her eyes. “Take your clothes off.” She held up the comforter, waiting for him to do as she instructed and join her. Alex rolled her eyes when he just stood there. “Mi amor, I only want to cuddle, and I know you like it, so let’s go.”

Alex patted the bed invitingly.

Kylok sighed after a tense moment of silence, undressing quickly before he climbed into bed with her.

Alex wasted no time, tossing the comforter over his large frame before wrapping her limbs around him like she was an octopus and he was her prized possession.

That seemed to break whatever spell he was under. Kylok turned, drawing Alex into the protection of his arms and holding her just as tightly.

A fine tremor went through him, and Alex bit her lip to keep from pestering him with questions. She hated seeing her Kylok so upset, and she especially hated that she didn’t know how to help him.

“I don’t know what’s wrong, but it’ll be okay,” Alex whispered, nuzzling the crook of Kylok’s neck even as she avoided the spikes along his shoulder. She kissed his throat tenderly, her hands finding his braided hair and massaging his scalp.

Kylok didn’t say anything but eventually he relaxed, falling asleep while she held him.
